Quebec Helps Lead Rising Birth Rate

Births across Canada increase, as does the age of mothers.

OTTAWA — The number of births in Canada appears to be increasing, with more than half of babies being born to mothers over 30, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.

According to the report, released Tuesday, Canadian women gave birth to 367,864 babies in Canada in 2007, up 13,247 or 3.7 per cent from 2006. Also, Statistics Canada said the number of babies born in 2007 was the highest since 1995 and the fifth consecutive annual increase.

Border Guards Leave Eastern Ontario Post

Canadian border guards abandoned their posts early Monday at a U.S. border crossing at Cornwall, Ont., after talks broke down with Mohawk officials over the arming of border guards.

Canadian Border Services Agency workers left their posts on Cornwall Island, citing safety concerns.

Mohawk leaders from the Akwesasne Mohawk territory, which straddles the borders of Quebec, Ontario and New York, say they don't want the guards to be armed because it would violate their sovereignty and increase the likelihood of violent confrontations.
