The parade had two names – Carifête and Carifiesta – and two organizing committees at odds with each other. They even had different coloured tractor-trailers for their floats.
But the sour subtext to Saturday's annual Caribbean parade didn’t stop thousands of Montrealers from flocking downtown to take in the elaborate glittery costumes and dance to the beat of island music.
The parade moved slowly east on René Lévesque Blvd. and included steel bands and flashy costumes. Many people lining the route clutched or wore flags from places like Grenada, Barbados, St. Vincent and Haiti.
