Providers Of Medical Marijuana Celebrate 10 Years Of Service

The co-founders and the director of The Montreal Compassion Club are celebrating their ten-year anniversary. They opened their doors to the public on Oct. 1, 1999.

October 1 marks the ten-year anniversary of The Montreal Compassion Club, an institution that helps people cope with health problems through the use of medical marijuana.

Despite the controversial nature of their mission, the club's founders say they felt they were doing the right thing when they opened their doors to the public a decade ago.

New 579 Area Code For Regions Around Montreal

Regions surrounding Montreal will get a new area code in 2010 to meet a growing demand for new phone numbers.

Starting in August, 2010, a new 579 area code will be introduced in in the territory now served by the 450 code.

Liberals Vote To Bring Back Highway Tolls

DRUMMONDVILLE - Delegates to a weekend meeting of the Quebec Liberal Party voted today to bring back highway tolls, one of a series of measures to balance the provincial budget.

Delegates also approved resolutions to increase the excise tax on alcohol and to introduce a new excise tax on energy drinks, chips, soft drinks and candies.

Charest Government Asks Quebecers For Input

The Charest government is meeting with Quebecers to discuss their thoughts on taxation and paying down the deficit.

At the Liberal general council meeting in Drummondville, 100 kilometres northeast of Montreal, Charest put the question of how to balance the books to Quebecers.

Hydro Hike, CEGEP Tutition Fees On The Table: Liberals

DRUMMONDVILLE - Delegates to a weekend meeting of the ruling Quebec Liberal Party approved a proposal to raise electricity rates gradually to market levels and another to introduce "modest" tuition fees for CEGEPs.

Quebec now boasts hydro rates among the lowest in North America, at 6.8 cents a kilowatt-hour, compared with 11.17 cents in Toronto and 21.27 cents in New York.

And CEGEPs, unique to the province, are tuition-free. Several delegates objected that CEGEPs should continue to be free, suggesting the "modest" start could soon lead to more substantial fees.

Bardot Calls For Maple Syrup Boycott

French film legend Brigitte Bardot has renewed her crusade against the Canadian seal hunt by calling for a boycott of Canadian maple syrup.

In a message posted Thursday on a blog belonging to the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Bardot said "refusing to buy maple syrup so as to refuse to be an accomplice to the slaughter perpetrated on the ice floes can send a strong message to Canadian officials."

Former FARC hostage gives emotional speech to National Assembly.

QUEBEC – In an emotional 20-minute speech, Ingrid Betancourt, who received the medal of honour of the Quebec National Assembly Wednesday, thanked the MNAs for their 2002 unanimous resolution calling for her release from captivity.

“You were the first,” Betancourt said, calling for continued efforts to free the remaining hostages of the Marxist Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarios de Colombia, or FARC, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

QUEBEC - Pauline Marois said Sunday she would not have applauded the FLQ manifesto and Gilles Duceppe downplayed the shouting of the FLQ’s “Nous vaincrons!” battle cry at a 24-hour reading of texts drawn from Quebec’s history.

“There are people who shout that, just as there could be people who shout stupid things in Sault Ste. Marie,” Duceppe told reporters.

My Comment: I was in Quebec City this afternoon, and I saw the spectacle that the Gazette is reporting. To be frank .... the Gazette is sugar coating what had happened here today.

I was on the grounds for two hours yesterday, and I was there today.Yesterday was a family event .... today .... a separatist propaganda event that spread hate and intolerance to people who are not French Quebecois.

Pauline Marois lectures about respect .... but she sure as hell does not respect me, and she and the political party that she represents certainly do not respect people who are not French Quebecers in this province.
