United Opposition At City Hall Vanishes

Bergeron, Labonté go separate ways, giving mayor an easy run for re-election.

The chances of Montreal getting a hotly contested municipal election next November seemed good only five months ago. Leaders of the city's two opposition parties, Vision Montreal and Projet Montréal, said at that time they were considering forming a common front against Mayor Gérald Tremblay's Union Montréal. A poll at the time suggested such an alliance might have a fighting chance of victory.

But that idea is now defunct, says Projet leader Richard Bergeron. "There is no question of an entente (with Vision)," he told me this week.
