Postcard From Montreal: Bixi And Bike Lanes

Toronto has a new reason to envy Montreal.

The city has reached out and embraced bike culture with a big, sloppy two-cheek kiss over the last few years, and nothing illustrates Montreal’s love affair with cycling like the new Bixi program.

New solar-powered bike rental stands are everywhere, but many of them are empty because the pedal-yourself taxi service is super popular just weeks after launching.

Montrealers can buy a monthly pass for $78 a month. But visitors can ride at a cost of $5 for 24 hours. The bikes are free for 30 minutes. So you just pluck one from a stand, cycle away and drop it off at your next destination.
