In a world of scarce energy resources and global warming, how do you put a value on hydroelectric power? The stuff is renewable, nonpolluting and in huge demand in North America as utilities look to decrease their dependence on coal and oil-fired generation.
By just about any measure, hydro power is worth gold in today's markets. Just look at the record annual profit racked up by Hydro-Québec.
The government-owned utility reported net income of $3.1 billion for 2008 on revenue of $12.7 billion. Nearly one-third of that profit came from selling power to customers in neighbouring provinces and U.S. states.
