Showrooms Struggling

Crisis or no crisis, car dealers shut the door on Saturday tire-kicking.

The Montreal Automobile Dealers Corp. has slammed the brakes on a request by local General Motors dealerships to open Saturdays in an attempt to boost sagging sales.

Diane Bélair, executive vice-president of the 224-member corporation, said about 170 dealers who attended a special meeting Thursday voted 91 per cent in favour of maintaining the opening-hours regulation established in 1972 that prohibits weekend sales.
