MONTREAL - Coco avant Chanel isn’t the most inspired offering, but it is worth a peak if only to once again marvel at the luminous Audrey Tautou’s screen presence.
The actress that we all fell for so hard in Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain just lights up the screen with her true-to-life portrayal of fashion icon Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. Tautou – whom, I suspect, does not have any sub-par performances on her resumé – looks uncannily like the young Chanel but that’s not why this works so well. The too-beautiful, oh-so-petite Tautou just channels the defiant intensity that defined Chanel in her early years and she’s always a pleasure to watch.
