Mount Royal May Get Walking, Cycling Loop

From The Montreal Gazette:

MONTREAL - It's an idea that has been in the planning stage for nearly 20 years, but a ring road around Mount Royal for cyclists and pedestrians now seems closer to reality.

The city's public consultation office released its findings yesterday into hearings on the 10-kilometre loop, originally proposed in 1990. Most people were in favour of the road.

The plan would involve linking the existing Olmstead path - which begins near McGill's Molson Stadium, and runs to the Mount Royal Summit - though the cemetery, the grounds of the Université de Montréal, and then back to the Olmstead path.

The consultation office said people who attended hearings last June also suggested building a walking path to the mountain from the Édouard Montpetit or the Université de Montréal métro stations. They also suggested building a path that would link the three summits of Westmount, Mount Royal and Outremont.

Such a path is not being planned and would have to be worked out with the demerged suburb of Westmount.
