Mayor's Promises Come With Tax Increase

Tremblay promises cleaner streets and faster snow removal.

Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay is promising cleaner streets and better snow removal if he's re-elected in the Nov. 1 municipal election, but he said Friday that improvements to services would come with a tax increase.

Tremblay said his administration will reduce the time it takes to clear snow from the city's streets and sidewalks by 50 per cent.

He also said he will invest $10 million a year to reduce the number of potholes, and another $10 million a year would go towards making the city cleaner.

But, he said, he can't do those things without raising taxes.
