When the Plateau borough refused their request for funding of a lane-way beautification project for a second time, a group of neighbours on Laval and Hotel de Ville decided to take matters into their own hands and applied for funding from environmental and federal organizations and got $30,000 to pull up concrete and put in plants and flowers. Neighbours take matters into their own hands - and their own wheelbarrows - to beautify their block.
When Marcelle Bastien saw one of her neighbours sweeping up the lane behind his house so his two young children could play, she knew something had to be done.
The back alley- between Laval and Hôtel de Ville Aves. at Rachel St. and Duluth Ave. - was a dismal concrete slab "where no one really wanted to go," Bastien said.
