Hydro-Québec Seeks Expansion, Rate Hikes

Between now and 2013, Hydro-Québec will work towards building new hydroelectric projects and expanding others, according to the utility's strategic plan made public today.

But during that same period, the utility is expected to generate almost 37 terrawatt hours of surplus electricity, according to the document. Equal to one million kilowatt hours, one terrawatt hour can meet the annual energy needs of about 60,600 average Quebec homes.

Hydro-Québec will invest just over $25 billion between 2009 and 2013, the utility said.
