At the end of every Just for Laughs festival, audiences are reminded of that old, yet still relevant adage: “Dying is easy; comedy is hard.” Often, both are proven simultaneously.
It’s not that difficult to comprehend why John Cleese’s gala on Sunday night didn’t turn out as hoped. The legendary Pythoneer had to bow out of a gala gig last Wednesday due to illness, and in an attempt to placate those who had purchased tickets for that show, festival organizers arranged a free show for them, Sunday at 10 p.m., and also had the eager Cleese host the All-Star Gala, Sunday at 7 p.m.
