Montreal Car Thieves Prey On Tourists

MONTREAL - When Luis Calleja came to Montreal for the weekend, filing a police report for his stolen car was the last thing he thought he’d be doing.

“I was shocked,” said the retiree from Toronto.

He drove in with his wife to attend a reunion for people from the same town in the Philippines. The couple arrived July 4 around 3 p.m. and parked their car near the entrance of their hotel, the Dorval Holiday Inn.

“There were security cameras about 10 cars away,” Calleja recalled.

“The next morning, we went to go for a picnic and the car was gone,” he said. “We don’t even know what time it was stolen.”

Car theft is nothing new to Montreal, which was once dubbed the car theft capital of North America.

My Comment: The penalties for stealing a car in Quebec is a joke. As long as the punishment is lenient, this crime will continue.
