New Group Wants To Protect French Language, Curb Spread Of English

Members of Mouvement Monteregie Francais met in Longueuil on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009

From The CTV:

My Comment: A bunch of old French Quebecers telling young non-French Quebecers to speak French. Yeah right.

I'm all for promoting French Quebec language and culture, it can be interesting and inviting, but not if it's rammed down our throats. They need to encourage people to use French not discourage people from using English. Use the media, not the law...

As a newcomer to Montreal, I find those groups simply xenophobic and racist since they rants are always directed towards foreigners like myself. I am totally bilingual English/Spanish, and have a decent level of fluency in French, I am willing to improve because I have to, after all, I will be living in the province of Quebec, but the aggressive attitudes of groups like this, along the PQ, the SSJB and others kill any interest I might develop in the Quebecois culture. I will limit myself to speak French whenever I have to and that will be it, I already don´t care that much for the Fete National, Quebecois singers, authors or any other cultural expressions, for me those are for the "laine pur", so not being one of them or even having a French last name I see no reason why I should be interested at all...and obviously, once I am a Canadian citizen, I will never support the separatist.
