Alex Ovechkin scored a highlight-reel goal and Alexander Semin produced the shootout winner to give the Washington Capitals a 4-3 victory Wednesday over the reeling Montreal Canadiens, who were without Alex Kovalev as he began a team-imposed two-game sabbatical.
The struggling forward was told by general manager Bob Gainey on Tuesday that he wouldn't be with the team for its games on Wednesday in Washington and Thursday in Pittsburgh (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 7 p.m. ET), and Kovalev's future with the team is uncertain.
