Quebec Politician Avoids Handshakes For Fear Of Spreading H1N1

QUEBEC — A Quebec mayor will avoid handshakes — one of a politician's favourite tools — to curb the spread of the H1N1 virus during municipal elections this fall.

Public health authorities are bracing for a more virulent outbreak of H1N1 later this year, and the mayor of the municipality of L'Ancienne-Lorette, just outside Quebec City, is taking the threat seriously and banning handshakes in his campaign.

"On the campaign trail, you meet tens of people every day. By avoiding to shake hands, we want to protect the health of our citizens," said Emile Loranger.
