The Main Is Safe Despite Recent Violence, Merchants Say

MONTREAL — Shocked though they were to hear the lethal “pop, pop, pop” of gunfire in their midst twice within hours this weekend, residents and merchants on the Main were not convinced Monday it signalled a troublesome trend on the city’s most storied strip.

Though two male shooting victims are known to police, Commander Line Blanchard says there’s no new gang war starting up.

In one incident this weekend, a 27-year-old man was shot to death and a 22-year-old woman seriously injured by a stray bullet on a crowded sidewalk on St. Laurent Blvd. The shooting took place just south of Duluth St. about 3:25 a.m. Sunday, minutes after bars closed for the night.
